Video killed the radio star (chap 7)

99.5 FM
description: it's listener driven, includes rock/alternative/little bit of everything with a variety of today and yesterday
geared toward: parents with families who still want to be "in the scene"
advertising: Improvement ads, medical ads, cars, sam's club, homes, etc.
Why is it successful? because it is listener driven. We are inclined to listen to stations that give us a choice. Stations that honestly care what we want to listen to and understand that we drive their sales and the more we like it the more they get from it.
960 AM (the zone)
description: sports radio, talk
geared toward: sport fanatics, any Utah school fan (ie: BYU, UoU, USU, etc).
advertising: Banks, Ski places, TV shows
Why is it successful? Because there are tons of temporary college students in the area who want and feel the need to be informed about games going on. They provide a personal perspective on various games because they are there. The play by plays and interviews with team members also provide incentive.
97.5 FM (the blaze)
description: rock music of today and yesterday
geared toward: Young Adults, older men reliving their youth
advertising: Southwest Airlines, Utah Jazz, Cars
Why is it successful? Because there aren't many stations out there that are devoted to just rock. A lot of them have branched out into alternative. This station stays true to their creed that they are rock. Also, their advertisers reach a high populace that is looking for excitement not just from the game but also every other part of their lives.
89.1 FM
description: Classical music, church oriented (includes religious music)
geared toward: Utah Mormons, Even just religious people
advertising: BYU, Creamery, DI, church related things, value driven items.
Why is it successful? Because Utah it full of LDS people. Sunday's are valued in our culture and therefore the classical music is popular. Also, individuals like to support church funded programs, this is one of them. It is produced through BYU and is therefore church funded since they are on 89.1. They thrive on donations.

630 AM
description: Informative talk radio, feed from CNN
geared toward: geared toward commuters, adults, parents active in the community
advertising: Cars, jewelers, JCPenney, Laptops, Office Supply Stores, Super 8
Why is it successful? Because a lot of people commute to SLC from wherever and in the mornings like to be informed. Just as with every other aforementioned station, the advertisers supply the money and the advertisers want stations that have lots of listeners. This station has the commuters and the people who are at work. Therefore it is a large population and the advertisers will pay more for a 30 second spot.
