who does it best? [9.15.08]

Newspaper Article. Magazine Article. Radio Program. Television Show.

These four types of mass communication are different in many regards. I think that out of these four the most entertaining would have to be a television show. Television has visuals as well as the fact that you can hear it and multi task at the same time. I know that out of these four things I definitely participate in the television show the most. I know that in a situation where I had the choice of one of these four I would most likely pick the television show. The visuals help me remember things, where as reading, I will sometimes just glaze over while reading it and get nothing out of it. For example, my parents are big FOX News watchers. Therefore, I have developed a liking to that network station. Seeing video footage of hurricanes, watching debates go underway, listening to witnesses, makes me feel like I am involved in the large scheme of things. It makes me feel like I can go out and do something. That adds to the entertainment of it.

The most informing of these four would have to be the Newspaper article. I choose this because I know there are strict guidelines that newspapers have to follow. Television shows can get away with saying false things but in the newspaper they have to print a retraction and it is a huge deal because it is printed once a day and that is all they can do for that one day. It may not present both side of the spectrum on political pieces, but in general I believe it does the best job of informing the reader. I have read many different newspapers in my life and I have found all of them to be informing. They appear at your doorstep every single day with new headlines and new articles. Sometimes when I will read the Wall Street Journal I’ll stop shortly after I pick it up because it is just too much information and not entertaining enough!

Out of these four I believe Radio programs to be the most persuading. If it is a talk show the person who is hosting the show can talk and talk and talk till he feels he got his message through. In the other things you are limited to a certain time limit or space on a page. The radio show may have a time limit, but the host can speak faster and also accept phone calls and debate the issue with them. This causes even more persuasion. Even when commercials come on the host will sometimes support them and testify of the greatness of the product. I have listened to Dr. Laura a few times and I have her verbally support many products. Also, the whole point of her show is to give advice, or to persuade people to believe that what she says will work. I find myself agreeing with her most of the time but sometimes I think she doesn’t think through every view of the situation and just gives fast advice. In generally though I believe her to be very persuasive in what she is trying to do.
