I love books. (chap 3)

So I asked 10 people the question "read any good books lately?" and I pretty much just got a laugh. But I really think that's because of the way I posed the question. After I explained why I was asking 8/10 interviewed right off the bat said "well, my textbooks... but that's not good reading". So I had to probe them even more. That is when I started getting the summer reading books. It's highly convenient that I'm taking this class fall semester since the summer just ended and that is when students have more leisure time. On average, the 10 people interviewed read 6 books in the last 6 months. That really does not seem like a lot. Especially since this summer I probably raked up a whopping 20 books (I spent my summer nannying and found myself with a lot of free time). But since seven of these interviewee's were girls the books were girly novels. Not those nasty romance novels, but ones like Shopaholic, Gossip Girl, and the other books in the library/bookstores that have bright, colorful covers. One of these girls though did read things like Naked Economics and books on the way the government works for fun. That was interesting to learn. The three men I interviewed read thriller novels from Stephen King or law novels from the likes of John Grisham.

All 10 of my interviewee's were students and therfore present a very biased source. If I had interviewed parents, ie: mine, I would have had a substantially larger average number of books. I'm not sure if I can apply that to all parents, but with mine it would most definitely apply. I'm not sure how this can directly apply to society but I can make my assumptions. The reflection on society that my results may show is that the American public is spending their time elsewhere. People aren't as engrossed by books since we have lots of other forms of media. The television offers a very exciting incentive. Instead of using our own imaginations we could watch it unfold before our very eyes. The developed laziness is amazing. But all the same, I love television so who am I to speak?
