Life (not) in Utah

As you well should know, I just returned from a fantastic trip in New York City. There is no denying it - it was the best week of my year thus far.

I truly am a city girl. I am not meant to live in a small town, rural america, or even a suburb. There's a side of me that comes out when I'm in New York City, it was named "City Lacey". I don't really know how to describe her, but she is not afraid of anything, will sieze any opportunity, and is super ambitious - and doesn't get tired. Honestly though, if I learned anything from this trip it's that I belong in a big city.

Okay so my week started out in Brooklyn. In the morning when I was to make my way to the island of Manhattan it was a perfect Fall day. I had absolutely no objection to walking to the subway station .5 mile away lugging my luggage at 7:15 in the morning.

After I had met up with Sara, Niki, and Chad at the church in Lincoln Center, we headed to get our bike rentals to ride in Central Park!

It was a blast. We rode bikes for two hours and it was the most perfect fall weather. Couldn't have asked for better.

Following this we went over to these guys apartment that we had met in the singles ward earlier that day. They were super nice and fed us - definitely a nice welcome "into the ward" (I won't be in that ward for 7 months, but I'm excited for the day that I can be).

That night though we went out to Times Square. It was way fun. We took in the touristy stuff, shoved our faces full of food and took photos.

Monday began a whole mess of Advertising Week! All of those going-ons combined with the people that I was with, made for the best week ever! On Monday we went to a bunch of "lectures" and learned so much about the industry (silo'ing, digital, etc). We also went to a Bruno Mars and John Legend concert. The AdLab of course stood right off the stage and took in the limelight.

Tuesday began our run of Advertising Agency visits! These are the fantastic agencies we visited: Droga 5, Weiden & Kennedy, Ogilvy, Naked, mcgarrybowen, Saatchi & Saatchi, and McCaan. (these agencies are in no particular order)

Visiting those agencies really opened my eyes. It was fantastic to see first hand how agency culture, ethics, goals, etc, affect the work environment. It made me realize that I think I am cut out for a bigger agency. The small boutiquey ones are fantastic, don't get me wrong! But, I just think I will thrive and excel in a larger environment. Just like I said earlier, I love the lure of the big city, and I love the allure of the big working environment with lots of people!

In addition to all the fun agency visits, we did touristy things. We rode on the Staten Island Ferry at like 9pm, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, ate dinner at Grimaldi's, walked around Washington Square Park, got Frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity3, purchased chocolate from Dylan's Candy Bar, and lots of other things.

I seriously loved AdWeek and would not give it up for anything (ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, there are some things I would give it up for). But really, any aspiring advertisers out there  questioning about going to AdWeek 2011, there shouldn't even be a question.
