My readers (that aren't my family) might not know this, but I'M FINNISH!

I always flaunt the fact that I'm Italian, I love to tell people that I'm Italian and that my grandmothers name was Angeline Paoli and I have great-twin-uncles named Guido & Luido, but! Who knew I was Finnish!? Definitely not you.

So, on the vein of trying to be proud of my heritage, I decided to do some research on the land of Finland(ia). (I added the -ia for more fun when you say it)

1) Easiest flag to remember and to draw. Ever. excluding Japan.

2) Finnish is one of the hardest languages to learn - it has 15 different grammatical cases. English has 2, and German has 4 (just to put it into perspective). But my grandfather (Clifford Francis Paulson) spoke it fluently. way to go grandpa!

3) There are tons of reindeer in Finland! how fun.

4) Female President. Booya.

ps. Finland was the first country to grant women voting rights (1906).

5) Tap water is so great in Helsinki that it is bottled and sold to none other than Saudi Arabia.

6) Finland hosts world championship events such as: mosquito swatting, wife-carrying, mobile phone throwing, boot throwing and swamp soccer.

you might think you're good at soccer, but until you've played it in a swamp I don't know if you can say that.

7) The 15th anniversary of the World Championship of Air Guitar will take place in Finland.

8) Donald Duck comics were banned in Finland because he doesn't wear pants. (moral compass = straight on)

9) There are 2.2 million saunas in Finland. Apparently it's as common as going to a pub is for a Brit.

10) Finland is considered the most competitive country in the world. They also hold the most world championships. (whether thats legit championships (ie: hockey) or wife-carrying...)

Yeah, so I'm Finnish, and that's, pretty cool.

Living With a Family

The thing about living with a family that has little kids is that things go missing.

Let's take into account my missing hairbrush. This morning I used it to, you guessed it, brush my hair. Now, less than 12 hours later, it's missing. Not in any of the drawers in my bathroom, not in any of the girls bathroom, and I doubt the boy would take a pink hairbrush to brush is buzz cut...

Another thing about living with a family that has little kids is that they like to rough house.

When I say rough house, I don't mean chase each other lahdydahdah, I mean rough.house. These kids are tough and active. I usually get a nightly tackle from one of the three youngest. Usually these tackles involve a dog piling of sorts. They come out of nowhere. I may turn the corner and BAM, my legs are taken out from under me. Or I could be watching a movie when they all come running in. I really couldn't predict when it happens if I wanted to.

The last thing about living with a family with little kids is that they like to show they love you.

Thats probably the best part.

I still have no idea how this works, but here's the explanation if you want to read a couple paragraphs.

"The prop in the video may look like an oversize checkerboard,

but the squares are actually the same color."

"The illusion works because of the "shadow" that falls on the checkerboard. Lets think of the square that the shadow falls on. Now picture that the shadow doesnt exist, you would see a light colored square surrounded by the dark colored squares. But when the shadow falls on top of that light colored square, the shadow causes the shade to become darker but it also causes the surrounding darker squares to become darker. So within the shadow region the brightness and darkness of the squares are still relative to one another. But they are no longer relative to the squares that lie outside of the shadow.

So if you were able to pick up the middle square and move it to one of the outside dark squares, they would be 2 different shades, But the trick is ..that when you move the square you are moving it WITH the shadow still printed on the square. So now you've moved it out of its relative area, outside of the shadow region (but with the shadow still printed on the square) ..to the area where it's the same shade as the "dark" square. "

I don't know if you've seen this video of the Grand Rapids lipdub yet, but here it is!

I love this for two reasons:

1) I was born in Grand Rapids and lived there till I was 6

2) American Pie was the song my dad always played on the piano growing up

Aside from those two not-so-widely-known facts, this video is just so good! Logistically how they got all those people to do that I will never understand. I've seen the one from BYU-Idaho and wondered that same thing, but going all over a city and probably having more than a thousand people participate is a feat!

This brand exudes top class design and snooty-ness. I love it nonetheless. I don't think I'd ever, actually I'm sure I'd never, spend the money (or have the money) to purchase a phone like any of the ones featured. Even still, the design for the iPhone with the 6 clocks is so classy! I've always loved clocks that are set to different times around the world. It seems silly to feature it on a phone but I think it's beautiful.

They have so much swagger at this place - they designed an iPhone for both the man and woman. This company wouldn't exist if there wasn't a market for it. I imagine it's really interesting trying to market to that specific demographic.

Anyway - the Lady and Man iPhone's are available for a meager $5,000, while the first photo (of the Time Machine) is available for $6,000 sometime later this year.

Beyonce is an amazing dancer (as we all know from her Single Ladies music video) but remember back when Britney's video's were choreographed and not staged? Remember when we didn't have to follow a story line (Taylor Swift)? I mean, it was blaringly obvious what it was that was going on through the lyrics, but the music video was a mini-movie.

On a brief 90's nostalgia I watched old videos featured on TRL and realized they were all dancing! I think some artists are moving back to that style and I love that Beyonce has been doing it all along.

Live Blogging from Turkey!

Greetings blog followers, and those who secretly follow my blog but haven't yet taken the leap to become an actual follower. I am currently in the wonderful land of Turkey! For those of you who don't know where that is, here is a map.

Now, I am only in Turkey for a mere 3.5 hours, and technically I'm only in the airport. But I venture to say that that is more than most people can say. Ever.

This definitely has been interesting. I didn't sleep at all on the 10 hour flight, because Turkish Airlines had over 130 movies to choose from! That's not including their numerous TV shows, games, and other forms of entertainment on their larger than normal individual screen televisions.

Anyway, in the airport, I've already:

1) taken a survey

2) seen two Russian men about 7.5 feet tall (their hips were at my shoulders. NOT JOKING.)

3) walked the length of the airport about 8 times

4) not understood one word of this turkish language.

5) smiled like an idiot because I'm in a country I've never been before with people I've never met anyone like.

More adventures are on their way. (outside of the airport variety)

2012 Beetle

When the redesigned Beetle came out in 2000, I was in love. I was also in 7th grade, so I also loved putting little heart stickers by my eyes, wearing floral print shapeless dresses, and my middle school boyfriend that I only saw at school - if that puts anything in perspective.

So it's interesting to see now that they have redesigned the Beetle and given it more of a sports car edge. The shape is sleeker, longer, and, generally speaking, less bug-looking. I think it's a vast improvement over where the car was just over a decade ago, but I don't think I'll be purchasing one anytime in the near future.

I have to apologize for the lack of blog posting this week. Normally I would pre-date the posts so that I wouldn't have to think about it, but I didn't even have time to do that!

This week:

I finished my last finals ever.
I pitched Gatorade to CD Brent Anderson from Chiat/Day
I faked my way through an hour long oral final with Chad Whatcott and Shelby Skousen
I packed up my entire life
I gave away nearly two-thirds of my entire life
I will graduate from college
I got free lunch from Tucano's
I will drive across the country with my parents (Salt Lake to Detroit)
I did a lot of other things too.

It has just been a crazy busy week, and will continue to get crazier. I promise I'll get back to blogging most amazing things. In the meantime, enjoy the following:
